Marine Corps Bootcamp Challenge 2007 San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot

Festivities started the day prior to the race when our participants accompanied Purple Heart Family Support volunteer Joyce Orrell to Balboa Naval Hospital. They wore their Team Marine Parents t-shirts and had them signed by the Marines.

"Visiting the Wounded Warriors was such an honor and privilege. They were all gracious, outgoing and so full of life that I took that energy with me as I walked out of that unit. I will be forever changed." said team member Jennifer Hyatt.

Six Marine moms signed up to participate with Team Marine Parents at the challenge. Some started training as early as last March. For several of these brave ladies, it was a physical diversion while their Marine sons were deployed. Sue Sand of Des Moines, IA rallied the families of her son's unit that is currently in Afghanistan. She set a goal of $2727 in honor of 2/7 (2d Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment) and together they raised an astounding $3,139. Trish Johnson of Muskego WI also surpassed her goal and raised $2,809. Collectively the 2008 Bootcamp Challenge team raised a grand total of $8,822! 100% of which went directly to the Marine Parents Care Package Project which sends bi-monthly care packages free of charge to Marines on combat deployments.

When asked about the event, Jennifer said, "The run was so much fun. I prepared and I felt great during the entire event. Toward the end I was getting tired, and I then reached around to my back and rubbed the signatures that the boys left on my shirt. I never felt tired again. They renewed me. If they could overcome all their pain and suffering and still walk around with those beautiful smiles, then I could suck it up and haul butt to the finish line."
