    Nanette and Mario Sagastume
    Mario Sagastume
Mario Sagastume was born and raised in Guatemala. He came to this country as a fifteen year-old and served in Second Battalion, 1st Marines, Fox Company, 3rd Platoon as a machine gunner in Vietnam in 1966-67. After becoming a citizen and graduating from college, he worked in corporate accounting and also has owned several businesses. He is now semi-retired. He is a very active board member of the Vietnam Veterans of 2/1, and helps plan their annual reunions. He is the quintessential example of: "Once a Marine, always a Marine"!

Mario and Nanette are extremely proud of their son, Cpl. Daniel Sagastume, who served in the Corps from 2001-2005. Daniel was a member of 1st Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team for two years; and, in 2004, Daniel served in Fallujah--as his dad did, with 2/1 Fox Company, 3rd Platoon!

Mario is doing the Bootcamp Challenge in memory of GySgt. Jim LaChance and 1st Sgt. Jim Little, both Vietnam veterans from 2/1 who have recently died.

    Nanette Sagastume
Nanette Sagastume is a retired nurse practitioner. She and Mario have lived in Chico, California for more than 30 years. They will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on the week prior to the BCC. They have four grown children, three grandchildren, and two more grandchildren on the way. (Daniel's first child is due at the beginning of September). Nanette is doing the BCC in honor of her two Marines--Mario and Daniel--and in honor of the six Marines from Daniel's platoon who were killed by a suicide bomber on Labor Day 2004: LCpl. Michael Allred, Pvt. David Burridge, LCpl. Quinn Keith, Cpl. Joseph McCarthy, Cpl. Mick Nygard-Bekowsky, LCpl. Lamont Wilson.

Mario and Nanette are looking forward to doing this challenge. It sounds like a hoot, and it's a great way to do something for our Marines who are protecting us. SEMPER FI !
